I was meant to get off the bus at the junction but missed my stop, just sitting there daydreaming, and so I got off at the next stop and there he was, this funny little man with piercing blue eyes. He smiled and his whole face lit up.
I smiled back. I couldn’t help myself.
He said, ‘Do I know you?’ and I thought probably not but I’d like to know you.
I said, ‘I missed my stop and live the other way.’
‘So do I’, he said. ‘I’m walking that way’.
‘We must live near each then,’ I said, ‘Though I’m not sure I’ve seen you around’.
‘I’ve only just moved in,’ he replied. ‘I’m just getting to know the neighbourhood.’
‘Maybe I can help you’, I said, wondering why on earth I suggested that. What was I thinking.
‘I live here,’ he said. It was a small block of flats. I’m on the top floor. There are great views of the common from my balcony. I agreed to go up.
‘Would you like a cup of tea’ he offered.
‘Yes please’ I said as he began to undress me.
Afterwards I thought, this really shouldn’t have happened. But I was glad it had.
